Building the Great Pyramid

The Great Pyramid of Khufu, built around 2560 BCE, is a masterpiece of ancient engineering. Constructed from an estimated 2.3 million stone blocks, with a total mass of 6 million tonnes, it was the tallest man-made structure in the world for over 3,800 years. The precision is staggering: the four sides of the base have an average error of only 58 millimetres, and it is aligned to true north with remarkable accuracy.

Historians believe it took a workforce of tens of thousands of skilled laborers about 20 to 27 years to complete. These were not slaves, but paid workers who lived in a nearby purpose-built village. They quarried, transported, and meticulously placed massive limestone and granite blocks, some weighing up to 80 tonnes, creating an eternal resting place for their pharaoh and a monument that continues to mystify and inspire humanity.

Frequently Asked Questions

Your questions about visiting the Pyramids, answered

How much does it cost to visit the Pyramids?
General admission to the Giza Plateau is EGP 700 for foreign adults. Entering the pyramids themselves requires separate tickets, with the Great Pyramid costing an additional EGP 1500. See our discounts page for student rates.
What are the opening hours?
The site is generally open from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, with slight variations between summer and winter. Last entry is usually one hour before closing. Check the full opening hours for details.
Is it worth going inside the Great Pyramid?
It is a unique experience, but be prepared for a steep, narrow, and hot climb. The King's Chamber is empty, so the experience is about the journey, not a destination with artifacts. It can be claustrophobic for some.
How long should I spend at the Giza Plateau?
Plan for at least 3 to 4 hours to see the main sights without rushing. If you plan to enter pyramids, take a camel ride, and visit the panorama viewpoint, a half-day (4-5 hours) is more realistic.
What is the best way to get to the Pyramids?
The easiest ways are via a pre-booked tour with transport, or using ride-hailing apps like Uber or Careem from Cairo. Public transport is an option but can be complex for first-time visitors. Our visitors guide has more transport details.
Can I take photos?
Yes, personal photography is allowed across the plateau. However, using a tripod may require a special permit, and professional shoots definitely do. Drones are strictly forbidden. See our rules page for more info.
Is the site accessible for wheelchair users?
Accessibility is limited. Paved roads connect the main areas, but the terrain around the pyramids is sandy and uneven. The interiors of the pyramids are not wheelchair accessible. See our accessibility page for detailed information.
What should I wear?
Wear light, breathable clothing and comfortable walking shoes. Modest dress (covering shoulders and knees) is recommended out of respect for local culture. A hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen are essential to protect against the sun.
